Music Ministry | |
Music is an essential component of vibrant liturgy. At St. Augustine we pride ourselves on our choirs and their role in ministry. Our choirs lead our congregation in singing praises to the Lord during all of our liturgies, but particularly during the Eucharist. Our organists and piano players are first class musicians and our choirs are the toast of the town. And, for some special occasions, we feature in professional African drummers.
At 11 am Mass the Gospel Choir leads us--singing music in the traditional Gospel way, and along new and innovative paths created by the exceptionally talented organist Robert Clayborne and Albert Langston. Mr. Langston leads the Gospel Choir.
At 8 am Mass, the choir provides a more traditional approach, through the use of the hymnal and spirituals. Gwen Atkins plays and leads the 8 am choir. At the Vigil Mass on Saturday at 5:30 a cantor leads the congregation with the inspired instrumentation of Leo Davis.
If you love to sing, then one of our choirs would love to have you join them. Gwen Atkins and Albert Langston, Jr., along with Ms. Jenny Marshall, lead the Music Ministry.
The Gospel Choir, steeped in the culture of African American traditional spiritual and gospel singing, receives and accepts invitations to sing at other Churches, Diocesan events and community activities. It's part of the Church's outreach to touch other people with the gift of song, and to help others praise God through song. To bring the choir to your church or event click StAugChurch and complete the contact form, checking "Choir Invitation," in the drop-down box.
Cantors lead the community in song at our liturgical celebrations. Cantors serve a special role at liturgy because a community of deep faith is usually noted for how well it sings. Currently, many of the St. Augustine Cantors are members of the choirs. Vincent Johnson leads the Cantors. |
