We Made the Cut!
It was a marvelous night in October 6, 2007, for those St. Augustine Parishoners who journeyed in two buses to see the Verizon Wireless How Sweet the Sound Contest at the FedEx Forum. Pride, passion and purpose fueled the St. Augustine Choir's performance, which was well received by the throng of Memphis music lovers in attendance.
The contest, which began with online and text messaging voting in August, ended with St. Augustine being named a semi-finalist. Some non-Catholics from throughout the city, who attended the performance, were amazed that a Catholic choir--even though Black--could render such a soul-stirring sound of praise. What an opportunity we had to help erase stereotypes and give fellow Christians a glimpse of St. Augustine's cultural heritage!
St. Augustine's Church Choir and the eight other semifinalists received $500 for participating in the How Sweet the Sound Contest.
Semifinalists in the small congregation category included the following:
-
Apostolic Deliverance Temple, Southside Church of God in Christ and Kingsway Christian Church.
-
St. Augustine Catholic Church, Miracle Temple Sanctuary and Holy City Church of God in Christ competed in the medium congregation category.
-
New Olivet Sanctuary Church, New Direction Christian Church and Brown Missionary Baptist Church competed in the large congregation category.

Verizon Wireless --"The choir competition is now over. However, St. Augustine did make it to the Semi-finals of the program and performed live at the FedEx Forum. Congratulations to our choir!
